The Literary Arts Committee (LAC) of the Mountain Home Arts Council (MHAC) is offering the LAC Writer's Grant to help promote literary arts in the community and to assist local writers in developing their craft or promoting their work. This year's grant is made possible by generous donations and matching funds from the Visual Arts Guild.

DeVore named LAC Writers Grant Recipient

June 2014—Marion DeVore has been awarded the 2014 Literary Arts Committee Writers Grant. DeVore was recently selected for the Kermit and Kathleen Schwanke Honors Institute for High School Students at the University of Montana. The grant ($300) will assist DeVore in paying for the two week creative writing course taught by professor of English Prageeta Sharma, recipient of the 2010 Howard Foundation Award and author of four poetry collections, including Undergloom (2013). Introduction to Creative Writing, held June 15-27, will focus on the craft of creative writing and the essential components of a poem, short story, and personal essay, and is worth two semester college credits. DeVore will share her experiences during a short presentation at the LAC's Fall Coffee House in October, which will coincide with the launch of The Whistle Pig Vol. 6.
DeVore, who enters her junior year at Mountain Home High School in the Fall, is the Arts & Entertainment editor for the Tiger Tribune. She writes the movie reviews on her blog (bluedevore22.edublogs.org) and has also been published in Words Work Wonders 2010, The Cabin's writing camp anthology; Syringa, the high school's literary journal; and The Whistle Pig, Elmore County's literary journal. DeVore plans to pursue a teaching degree with an emphasis on literature and creative writing.
LAC grants are awarded annually or as funds become available. The Literary Arts Committee is under the umbrella of the Mountain Home Arts Council.
